Toothpastes, like many other health and hygiene products, tend to be filled with several toxic chemicals and even plastics. Even many of the toothpastes that claim to be natural tend to contain some pretty suspicious ingredients.

Making your own toothpaste is a great way to ensure it is made with quality ingredients which leave your teeth whitened and strong. Alongside a nutrient dense diet, this toothpaste will prevent cavities and decay of the enamel and gums. Plus it is really quite cheap and lasts a long time!
Benefits Of All-Natural Whitening & Remineralizing Toothpaste
Natural toothpaste has many ingredients that help support the health of the gums and teeth without additional filler chemicals that can be harmful to human health. The products in this toothpaste are all safe to eat, so you can trust they are safe for brushing your teeth.
- Coconut Oil: Oil pulling has gained traction in recent years for its removal of bacteria in the mouth. Adding coconut oil to your toothpaste provides these same benefits. Coconut oil is one of the few foods that contains naturally occurring lauric acid which is an antibacterial agent. It reduces bad bacteria and helps prevent gingivitis and tooth decay that result from bacteria. Additionally, removing the bacteria helps reduce bad breath.
- Calcium Carbonate: Calcium carbonate is an abrasive which may seem unpleasant to put in your mouth. Rest assured, it is a mild and gentle abrasive. It clears away plaque and food debris and helps remineralize teeth.
- Baking Soda: Helps remineralize enamel and whiten teeth. Since baking soda is basic in nature, it restores the pH of the mouth by neutralizing acids from foods.
- Salt: Like baking soda, salt also acts as a neutralizer to acids in the mouth to restore a balanced pH, preventing tooth decay and acting as a whitening agent.
Tips & Tricks For Using Homemade Toothpaste
Many people tend to shy away from homemade hygiene products because they feel they don’t work as well or are inconvenient to use. We have come to expect a certain type of use from products and switching to something different can be an adjustment.
To help avoid that learning curve period, here are a few tips and tricks for getting the best results with your homemade toothpaste.
- Store in a cool place: Since the coconut oil will liquify at warmer temperatures, it is important to store the toothpaste somewhere cool. If not, the coconut oil can separate from the other ingredients and create a bit of a mess, especially when stored in a jar.
- Use silicone tubes when traveling: We have tried traveling with this toothpaste. Especially in the summer with warmer temperatures, it can be a bit of a mess when stored in a jar. I’d recommend grabbing some silicone tubes if you’re planning to travel or store it in a warmer place. Not only does the silicone not break like a glass jar does, but the silicone tubes also tend to hold the melted coconut oil a little better. They additionally make it easy to remix the ingredients if they do separate.
- A little goes a long way: You really don’t need much of this toothpaste when brushing. A pea sized amount will do the trick. It won’t foam up like traditional toothpaste, but it’s still working!
- Store in fridge and chop up into chunks: You certainly can store it in your bathroom, especially in the winter when it’s cooler. However, our bathroom tends to warm up in the summer, so I prefer to store mine in the fridge. It will become a solid which may not seem ideal for toothpaste. However, if you grab a knife or fork and break it apart into small chunks, they are easy to grab.
About Oral Detoxing
This toothpaste will detoxify toxins that your mouth has been exposed to. As a result, some people will have some sore or dry throat symptoms. My husband and I both did, especially while we were sleeping after just brushing our teeth before bed. This is an effect of the detoxification process. It does eventually go away but is something to be aware of.
How To Make The Best Homemade Natural Toothpaste
Ingredients:
- ½ cup organic cold-pressed or traditionally fermented coconut oil (melted)
- 1 tablespoon sea salt or Himilayan pink salt
- 2 tablespoons calcium carbonate
- ½ cup baking soda
- 1 tablespoon organic peppermint flavor (note be sure to use flavor used for cooking rather than essential oil)
Instructions:
- Using a mortar and pestle, grind the salt into a fine powder. You may be tempted to skip this step, but DON’T! If the salt is too large, it will grind on your gums and cause pain with brushing.
- Mix all ingredients together until the texture is light and fluffy.
- The mixture will fit nicely into an 8oz jar. However, I prefer to use 2-4oz jars for mine as it makes it easier to dig it out of the bottom when it starts running low.
