The internet is full of information about decreasing toxins. Often times, someone is trying to sell their non-toxic product. While there are definitely some great low or non-toxic gadgets and products out there for purchase, there are also a lot of items claiming to be “natural” that still contain a number of questionable ingredients. Careful and thoughtful research is helpful weeding out some of these products. Fortunately, there are several ways to limit the amount of toxins you are exposed to without spending a dime.

When we first began seeking to limit the number of toxins in our home, there is was no shortage of advertising for products to buy which tend to add up very quickly. We have certainly made some small and larger purchases and investments over the years of things that we feel benefit our lifestyle. However, we still always look into free or nearly free options first. A lot of times, I have found these to not only be more cost effective but also simpler and requiring fewer items to clutter up our home.

This is why I have created a list of 6 completely free ways to decrease the toxins in your home. This is a great place to start if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the non-toxic marketing flying at you. These are small and simple changes that are designed to fit in to everyday life. Since these suggestion center around tasks and items that are a part of our every day routines, there is a significant impact when implemented into your daily routine and lifestyle.

Why Decreasing Toxins Is Important

It was not that long ago that I thought all the warnings around the amount of toxins we are exposed to every day was causing unnecessary worrying. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not recommending that you try to avoid every toxin all the time. First of all, it’s not possible and second, you’re likely to stress yourself out trying (which can be just as harmful if not more than the toxin itself.

However, I have personally seen the benefits on my own health, stress levels, and overall well being by implementing some of these strategies to limit toxins. There will always be toxins that are unavoidable. Fortunately, our bodies were designed with detoxifying systems and organs for just such an occasion. However, when we overload these detoxification systems, this is when we can begin to see negative effects on our health. By making a few small changes, you can help keep the overall load of toxins that your body processes on a daily basis at a more manageable level.

Benefits Of Decreasing Home Toxins

There are a myriad of reasons for wishing to decrease toxins in your home. We initially became interested in it for health reasons. As we have made these changes a part of our life, I have seen what a benefit it has on reducing the amount of waste that enters and exits our home.

A recent trip to our local landfill was an even more powerful reminder of what kind of impact the trash we consume and create in our homes has on our planet. Damaging our planet of course feeds right back into our health as the air we breathe and the water we drink is impacted by the amount of toxins exposed to the world around us.

If these reasons aren’t convincing enough, we have also seen the benefits in our finances and our time. I used to believe that natural options were more expensive and took more time to care for. While this is sometimes true, I have more often than not found it to be the exact opposite. I now have fewer items in my home which take less time to organize and clean around. Fewer items costs less money and less energy and time to manage.

When I do decide to spend more money on a product because it is made more sustainably, pays its workers fairly, or requires more time and effort to make, I make sure that it is something that is high quality enough to only need one of or will last for a long time. This method still ends up being more cost effective in the long run. For example, buying one natural cleaning product that can clean a lot of different things rather than several different products. Another example is purchasing high quality stainless steel or cast iron cookware that will last a lifetime versus cheaper non-stick options that degrade easily and have to be replaced often.

How To Start Decreasing Toxins

My best recommendation is to start small. Make one change at a time. While you can overhaul your whole home in one fell swoop, it is often overwhelming to make that many changes all at once. Start with the things that have the biggest impact on your daily life. Think about how often that practice or product gets used throughout your day. Think daily routines verses things the things that you only use every few weeks or months.

You may decide along the way that there are some purchases that are worth investing in. By going slow, you have time to think through which non-toxic swaps will have the most bang for your buck and create the most impact on your health.

I have created a list of six small and simple changes to help get you started. Fill out the form below to get this free resource!

This is in no way an exhaustive list. Get creative and find practices that work best for you. Implement them slowly adding in purchases or investments that seem right for your lifestyle and goals. Reducing toxins in your home doesn’t have to be time consuming and expensive. Start with these free suggestions below and you will be well on your way!
