As the leaves change colors and the air turns crisp, there are a variety of flavors and textures that symbolize this season. Apples and apple picking is one of those signature fall symbols. This dish is so much easier to cook up than apple pie but still a wonderful way to celebrate the flavors of fall.

Apple crisp is an easy dessert or snack to whip up when you’re looking for a quick and easy treat. Rather than fussing with a pie crust, you can just add a crumbly topping made with all natural sugars to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Basic Apple Crisp Ingredients

  • Apples
  • Coconut Oil
  • Old Fashioned Oats
  • Coconut Flakes
  • Pecans or Walnuts
  • Maple Syrup
  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Nutmeg

What Apples Work Best For Apple Crisp?

Really any type of apple works well for apple crisp. If you want it to be a little more tart select apples like Pink Lady, Macintosh, or Granny Smith. If  you like something sweeter, apples such as Honeycrisp or Fuji work great. I think a mixture is the best way to go. Not only would I recommend a mixture of flavors but also a mixture in textures. Combining both softer texture apples and some that are more crisp will give the dish texture variety. What type of apples you uses is highly customizable and totally up to your preferences!

Fresh or Canned Apples?

While I always opt for fresh when given the opportunity, canned apples work great for the recipe too. I would recommend cooking it for less time if you select canned apples since they will already be mostly soft. If this is the case, I cook for 10 minutes covered with aluminum foil to ensure the apples reheat and then an additional 15-20 minutes uncovered to crisp up the crumb topping. Fresh apples are my preferred method if  we have them on hand, but canned apples make a delicious treat as well!

What is the difference between apple crisp, apple crumble, and apple cobbler?

Apple crisp is typically made with an oat topping.  Apple crumble is made of a flour and butter based topping. Cobblers  are made with a crust similar to a pie crust.

Apple Crisp Toppings

Apple crisp is definitely great on its own, but who doesn’t love a little extra something to take it to the next level?

Ice Cream: Fresh homemade ice cream melting on top of the pumpkin crisp. Need I say more?

Whipped Cream: If you don’t have an ice cream maker, homemade whipped cream is another great and easy option to add as a topping.

Cream: When I’m really feeling lazy, I will just stir in some regular cream to give the mixture a creamy rich texture.

Coconut Oil: Add a scoop of coconut oil for added flavor and nutrient density.

How To Store Apple Crisp

Store any leftover in the fridge for 3-4 days.

How To Reheat Basic Apple Crisp with Oats

To reheat, simply pop it in the oven at 350 degrees until it is warmed through. You can also warm a single serve potion up on the stove top on low-medium heat with a bit of water in the bottom of a sauce pan.
